Mumbai City suffered a narrow defeat at the hands of debutants Churchill Brothers SC at the Fatorda Stadium in their opening game of the MG Indian Super League 2026-27 season.

The Islanders set the tempo early, controlling possession in the opening stages. In the 9th minute, Wilmar Jordan crossed for Brandon Fernandes, whose right-footed effort was blocked by Churchill Brothers goalkeeper Sayad Kadir. Both sides went into the break with the score goalless.

The breakthrough came in the 57th minute. From a short corner, Anil Gaonkar delivered a cross to Gaurav Bora, who headed the ball into the back of the net to score Churchill Brothers' first goal in the MG ISL.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 87th minute. Substitute Stendley Fernandes set up Sebastian Gutierrez, who finished clinically from inside the box. Mumbai City were awarded a penalty in stoppage time after Akash Mishra was brought down inside the box. Sergio Llamas converted from the spot to reduce the deficit, but his goal proved to be a late consolation as Churchill Brothers held on to secure the win.
