The Islanders suffered their first defeat of the 2025-26 Indian Super League falling 2-0 to FC Goa away from home.
The hosts began the contest on the front foot, looking to test Mumbai City’s defensive organisation early on. However, the Islanders held a compact shape, keeping the hosts at bay in what was a cagey opening 20 minutes.
The first test for Mumbai City came in the 27th minute when Muhammad Nemil struck from outside the box, forcing Phurba Lachenpa into a sharp save. FC Goa broke the deadlock from the resulting corner as Sahil Tavora reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box and fired it through a crowd of bodies, leaving the Phurba with little chance to intervene.
Mumbai City looked to respond immediately and nearly found a way back into the game with their first attack after the restart. Noufal P.N. attempted a long-range effort that troubled goalkeeper Hrithik Tiwari, who did well to make the save. The Islanders continued to push forward and created another promising opportunity when Aakash Mishra delivered a long ball for Jorge Pereyra Díaz. The striker managed to work his way into the box but was closed down by the defence before he could get his shot away.
Despite their attacking efforts, FC Goa struck again on the stroke of half-time. With three minutes of added time played, Nemil launched a powerful long-range strike that beat Phurba Lachenpa to double the hosts’ advantage heading into the interval.
Mumbai City emerged for the second half with renewed intensity, looking to find a way back into the contest. In the 59th minute, Zothanpuia was introduced in place of Tluanga as the Islanders looked to add fresh impetus in attack.
The Islanders were handed a promising opportunity in the 69th minute when Zothanpuia was brought down in a dangerous position just outside the box. Captain Lallianzuala Chhangte stepped up to take the free kick, but his effort was off target as Mumbai City continued their search for a breakthrough.
Seven minutes of added time were signalled at the end of the match, with Mumbai City continuing to search for a way back into the contest. However, FC Goa managed the closing stages effectively, maintaining their defensive structure and limiting the Islanders to few openings, eventually seeing out the match to secure the victory.
Mumbai City will aim to get back to winning ways and secure crucial points in the title race in their next fixture against Bengaluru FC away from home on 25th April.
