Mumbai City secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw against NorthEast United FC at Mumbai Football Arena, with a late equaliser from Captain Lallianzuala Chhangte ensuring the Islanders remained unbeaten.
The Islanders, who came into this match with an unchanged lineup, began on the front foot and dictated the tempo. After the opening exchanges, the visitors began to settle into the game. Mumbai City continued to create opportunities through patient build-up play. In the 10th minute, a neat string of passes culminated in Captain Lallianzuala Chhangte unleashing a strike from the edge of the area, which was well saved by Gurmeet.
The visitors threatened on the counter in the 17th minute, but Sahil Panwar tracked back diligently to block Lalrinzuala’s cross and concede a corner. After winning the ball from the corner, Mumbai City launched a promising counterattack with a numerical advantage, only for Pereyra Díaz to be flagged marginally offside as he entered the opposition half.
With the Islanders continuing to probe, Pereyra Díaz was brought down by Danny Meitei as he attempted to drive into the penalty box in the 20th minute, earning a free kick in a dangerous position and a booking for the midfielder. Brandon Fernandes stepped up to take the set-piece, but his effort drifted narrowly wide of the target.
The deadlock was nearly broken in the 33rd minute, when Mumbai City worked a short corner and Brandon Fernandes delivered a precise cross into the box, which was met by Joni Kauko. The ball then fell to Valpuia, who attempted to redirect it goalward, but his effort sailed just over the bar.
Just before the interval in the 44th minute, NorthEast United FC launched a counterattack after defending a Mumbai City corner. Chhangte, who had taken the set-piece, tracked all the way back into his own box to win possession and halt the danger, underlining the skipper’s defensive commitment.
NorthEast United FC broke the deadlock two minutes after the restart as Mumbai City were unable to deal with a free kick, with Jithin able to pick-up the loose ball and give the visitors the lead. The Islanders responded almost immediately, as Brandon Fernandes saw his shot deflected wide in the same minute following a dangerous cross from Aakash Mishra.
In the 67th minute, the home side introduced P.N. Noufal in place of Vikram Partap Singh as they searched for an equaliser. Noufal made an immediate impact with his direct running, and in the 75th minute he burst down the left wing and delivered a cross into the box, but the NorthEast United FC defence reacted well to intercept and clear the danger, as the home side continued to intensify the pressure.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 83rd minute when Kauko lifted a clever ball through to Jorge Pereyra Díaz, whose initial effort was denied by Gurmeet. The skipper then demonstrated his goal-scoring instinct to head home the rebound and level the score. The Islanders maintained the pressure in the closing stages, committing numbers forward but were ultimately unable to find the decisive goal as the contest ended level.
Mumbai City will now turn their focus to their next fixture against Sporting Club Delhi on 8th March at the Mumbai Football Arena, aiming to build on their momentum and continue their unbeaten start to the season.
