Mumbai City secured a 3rd place finish in the 2025-26 Indian Super League after a dramatic 2-0 victory over Punjab FC away from home.
With both sides still in the title race heading into the final day, it made for a high stakes encounter. Punjab FC made an attacking start to the game, looking to apply pressure early on, but Mumbai City remained composed and managed the opening exchanges well through their solid defensive organisation.
The Islanders gradually worked their way back into the game and began to enjoy more possession as the half progressed. They created an opportunity through a free kick in the 30th minute as Brandon Fernandes delivered an enticing ball into the box. The ball found Sahil Panwar but he was unable to make a clean connection under pressure from the defence, sending it out for a goal kick. As the half progressed, Mumbai City continued to remain organised defensively and restricted Punjab FC to limited openings on goal. Three minutes of added time were signalled at the end of the half, with both sides unable to find a breakthrough after an evenly matched 45 minutes.
With everything still to play for, the second half began at a much higher intensity as both sides searched for the all-important goal. Mumbai City created the first opportunity of the half in the 59th minute when Brandon Fernandes found Lallianzuala Chhangte at the edge of the box. The skipper managed to get his shot away from a difficult angle, but his effort was saved by the goalkeeper.
Punjab FC nearly went ahead in the 63rd minute as substitute Osuji’s long range effort was spilled by Rehenesh. Midfielder Daniel Ramirez picked up the loose ball inside the box and attempted to square it for striker Nsungusi Jr. but Nuno Reis tracked back to make a heroic block and deny a certain goal.
Mumbai City were handed an opportunity three minutes later when Jorge Ortiz was brought down while clean through on goal by Leon Augustin, who was shown a red card as the last defender. Captain Lallianzuala Chhangte took the resulting free kick, but his effort did not dip in time and sailed over.
With the Islanders piling on the pressure against ten men, the breakthrough finally arrived in the 79th minute as Valpuia found the back of the net for the Islanders. Aakash Mishra delivered a cross into the box which Valpuia met at close range before slotting the ball past the goalkeeper to give Mumbai City the lead.
Punjab FC were reduced to nine men in the closing stages after substitute Pramveer was shown a red card for lashing out at Zothanpuia, who had initially won the ball with a clean sliding tackle. Valpuia was also booked during the aftermath of the incident, which resulted in eight minutes of added time being signalled. Mumbai City sealed the victory with the final kick of the game following a swift counterattack led by Noufal P.N. The winger drove forward before unselfishly passing it to Vikram Partap Singh, who finished just ahead of the recovering defenders to add a second goal.
After a thrilling and hard-fought victory, Mumbai City concluded their league campaign with 25 points, narrowly finishing behind eventual champions East Bengal FC as well as Mohun Bahan SG, who both finished with 26 points.
