The Islanders will welcome the newly formed entity of ATK Mohun Bagan for the first time to the Mumbai Football Arena on the 6th of November 202, with action kicking off at 7.30pm IST.
The Islanders have had an impressive start to their ISL 2022/23 season remaining unbeaten after four games, winning twice and drawing twice in the process. Des Buckingham’s side played out a thrilling 3-3 draw against Hyderabad FC in their opening game of the season. The Islanders then went on to grab all three points at home against Odisha FC with a 2-0 win. In their third match they shared the points with Jamshedpur FC after a 1-1 draw and their most recent game saw them come away with a well-deserved 2-0 victory against Kerala Blasters FC, thanks to goals from Mehtab Singh and Jorge Pereyra Díaz.
ATK Mohun Bagan lost their first game of their ISL campaign 2-1 to Chennaiyan FC. However, the Mariners recovered well in their last two games. They recorded a convincing 5-2 victory in their second game of the season against Kerala Blasters FC. Their most recent game of the 2022/23 ISL season they took on East Bengal in the Kolkata derby which the Mariners won 2-0.
Coach Des Buckingham in the pre-match press conference talked about the team’s collective mindset as he said, “I think we can keep building and getting better round by round and we can achieve all the goals we set at the start of the season. I'm very happy with the progress that we've made since round one. Going to Kochi to play Kerala and playing in front of that crowd and putting on a performance that we did in the first half, I am very pleased with the team. If we can continue building our playing style and making sure that we set ourselves up defensively, I am sure we will come away with a victory in this match.”
Coach Buckimgham was accompanied by Vignesh who spoke about his role in the team this season, as he said, “It's true I am not playing as much this season. But as a player my duty is to train hard and improve. I want to work on improving in areas in which I am lacking and to be ready to get on the pitch whenever the coach needs me to play. ”
Buckingham signed off by saying, “When you come over here, it's a bit of a smaller stadium, but the quality of the fans that we have here, make sure there is a lot of noise in the stadium, they make sure we have a great atmosphere. It'll be good to see now, because if there's double the numbers as to what there has been, I'd like to think we double the atmosphere and hopefully we can put on a good performance for them.”
