Mumbai City FC marked the start of the 2025-26 Indian Super League season with a well-earned 1-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC, as a second-half breakthrough secured all three points for the Islanders.

Mumbai City kicked off on the front foot, with debutant Joni Kauko launching an effort on goal inside the first 20 seconds, setting the tempo for The Islanders. However, moments later, Jorge Pereyra Díaz was shown the first caution of the game after a turnover in midfield led to a rash challenge on Mohammed Bemammer.

The opening stages saw Mumbai City challenge Chennaiyin FC’s backline with a high press and quick passes. In the 4th minute, Jorge Ortiz was brought down by Elsinho as he drove forward, with the defender receiving a caution for the foul. Chhangte then delivered a dangerous cross in the 10th minute, forcing the visitors into a hurried clearance before seeing his follow-up blocked.

Mumbai continued to create chances, with Ortiz setting up Pereyra Díaz in the 18th minute, but Mohammad Nawaz reacted well to deny him. Mumbai City came close again in the 28th minute following a flowing team move that culminated in another cross from Brandon. Ortiz met the delivery inside the box but scuffed his attempt straight at the goalkeeper. Both teams continued to probe for openings but neither side was able to find the breakthrough as they went into half-time level after three minutes were added on.

Mumbai City began the second half with the same attacking intent, launching forward immediately after the restart. The Islanders were able to capitalise on the sustained pressure in the 48th minute. After Chennaiyin FC attempted to clear the danger, Mumbai City recycled possession quickly, and Joni Kauko delivered a cross into the box that was deflected into the net off Pritam Kotal’s attempted block, giving the midfield powerhouse a significant contribution on debut.

Shortly after, Kauko’s impressive first outing as an Islander came to an end in the 60th minute as he was replaced by Zothanpuia. After conceding, the visitors attacked from wide areas, repeatedly delivering crosses into the box, though Mumbai City managed to clear their lines under pressure. A dangerous chipped cross later in the half came close to crossing the line but was cleared in the nick of time by Valpuia, preserving Mumbai City’s lead.

In the closing stages, Chennaiyin FC enjoyed more of the ball as they searched for an equalizer. However, Mumbai City remained compact and disciplined at the back, managing the pace of the game and limiting the chances for the opposition. The Islanders held firm for seven minutes of added time to seal a 1-0 victory and begin their season on a winning note.

With momentum on their side, the Islanders will now turn their focus to their next challenge against Kerala Blasters FC on February 22, aiming to build on a positive start to the campaign.
