Mumbai City extended their lead at the top of table as they returned to action at the Mumbai Football Arena with a 1-0 win over Odisha FC after a second-half header from Captain Lallianzuala Chhangte.

The game had a physical and fast paced opening phase, with Mumbai City looking to assert control through quick transitions and attacking intent. The Islanders created an early opening from the left flank as Noufal P.N. delivered a promising cross into the box, but the Odisha FC defence managed to head the ball clear. Mumbai City continued to build pressure and earned the first corner of the game in the 10th minute. The set-piece was worked short to Brandon Fernandes on the edge of the box, but his effort was blocked.

The Islanders upped the pressure further in the 17th minute when Chhangte was brought down by Puitea, who was shown a yellow card. Brandon stepped up to take the resulting free kick but the opposition wall did its job. The Islanders came close again soon after when Valpuia played a long ball forward to Chhangte, who laid it off to Jorge Ortiz. The Spaniard’s effort was well saved by goalkeeper Amrinder Singh. Ortiz remained heavily involved in attack and created another opportunity in the 22nd minute, striking from outside the box with a shot destined for the top corner, only to be denied by a fine save from the goalkeeper.

Odisha FC eventually began to enjoy more possession in Mumbai City’s half and looked to create openings of their own. In the 35th minute, they fashioned their first clear chance when Puitea broke through the backline, but Phurba Lachenpa produced a sharp one-on-one save to keep the scores level. The teams went into the break with the scored level after 3 minutes were added on.

Mumbai City returned from the interval with renewed urgency and nearly broke the deadlock within 40 seconds, as Noufal surged into the box but was denied by the goalkeeper. The Islanders continued to control proceedings in the second half, maintaining pressure and looking more incisive in the final third. Odisha FC had their moments, including a corner in the 60th minute following another important save from Phurba, but Mumbai City remained organised and composed defensively.

In the 71st minute, Vikram Partap Singh was introduced in place of Brandon Fernandes, and he made an immediate impact, as he picked out Lallianzuala Chhangte with a precise cross. The skipper delivered a thumping header into the top corner to give the Islanders the lead.

With the advantage in hand, Mumbai City managed the game effectively in the closing stages. The introduction of Zothanpuia and Ayush Chhikara added fresh energy, while the Islanders continued to push forward and maintain control.

Six minutes of added time were signalled, and Mumbai City saw out the remainder of the game with authority, combining defensive discipline with composure in possession to secure all three points.

Mumbai City will look to widen the gap at the top in their next fixture on 9th April, where they take on Jamshedpur FC away from home.
